You should know that this study’s main goal was to analyze the overall level of compliance to image quality standards and quality assurance in different types of computed tomography. One vital piece of information necessary to understand this study better is that this entire study was conducted in the computed tomography of all the hospitals in Kenya.
Around 18 computed tomography facilities were inspected and analyzed to fulfill the primary goal of this objective. For this study, they developed a particular type of quantitative method, and they used this method to score the different results obtained.
The main objective of conducting so many inspections in this study was to establish the ideal level of compliance with internationally recognized standards like the ones mentioned in EGQC for computed tomography.

Well, you should know that the quality assurance assessment acted as a benchmark for the quality management system required in diagnostic facilities on the national level. This is one of the fundamental reasons for understanding this study; its process and outcomes are crucial for better CT quality management.
Understanding computed tomography
Suppose you are not aware of computed tomography. In that case, you should know that computed tomography, or what is more popularly known as CT, is a type of X-ray imaging modality that is now being used on the global level. It has become a standard requirement at every medical facility.
While using CT, many different types of X-ray beams passed through the human body to get reports related to diseases, wellness reports, and understanding the current clinical treatment outcomes. Understanding the basics of computed tomography will help you in better CT quality management. CT is superior to projection radiography and is being increasingly used in numerous examinations. The clinical applications of CT are being explored each day, and the complexity of the scanner is being carefully monitored. The continual development is the source of its large base of applications in radiotherapy treatments.
Process and items required
All the CT scanners that were used in this study were built by some of the top companies out there, like General Electrics, Siemens, Philips, and many more. During the study, 18 scanners were analyzed, and one important thing to note here is all these CT scanners were installed between the period 1987 to 2005.
And because of the non-subjectivity of the method, physical image quality criteria were preferred over anatomical quality factors. There 15 different types of indicators used to ensure quality assurance, and some of these indicators were as follows:-
- Code of practice
- Safety of workers
- Safety of people
- Records of patients
- Professional certifications
- The license of the device and much more
Now, you should know that CTs are available in two variants that are single slice and multidetector. These scanners are then further categorized based on the detector type, X-Ray tubes, size, archiving options, and such. The use of just single detectors is mostly ill-advised and may lead to recurrent expenses directed towards maintenance, inefficiency, and inability to provide the required support. The selection of scanners in most facilities is based on the patient workload, patient population, technical parameters such as availability of infrastructure, and clinical applications. Evaluating a medical facility’s clinical needs, however, can be a seriously daunting task. Since there is an availability of various software and hardware options, it can be hard to understand which will suit the best in line with the requirements of the facility. The objectivity of this study is based on all the above-mentioned parameters.
Quality assurance assessment
To achieve this study’s primary goal, all the quality factors chosen for this study are the basis of organizational processes in the entire department that dealt with diagnostics. There were four categories made to better move on with the research without coping with any overlapping, and these factors were:-
- Taking note of the maintenance and overall performance of the CT scanner in terms of reports, record keeping, control programs, and even relevant authorization.
- Use of quality and full protective gear and availability of professional certification.
- Use code of practice and availability as well. This will include training the staff, joining the person who will be dealing with quality control, and all the other factors that will affect the overall quality.
- The measures used to ensure radiation protection like the warning signs related to some radiation facility issues and much more.
Image quality tests
The image creation process in CT uses a reconstruction of numerous variants such as z filtering, to produce images virtually defining any thickness equal to or greater than the acquisition slice width as defined by the detector. It becomes imperative to take note of the increment distance in between the slides, and reconstruction kernel of other sets of additional data.
As you already know that 18 CT scanners were analyzed correctly to achieve this study’s primary goal. You are not aware that for every CT scanner used in this study, a particular type of IQ assessment was specially designed.
