Before the invention of Digital Photography in the early 21st century there was a famous type of photography known as “Film Photography”. In this type of Photography, a Film role was used as memory storage, this film role was negative; from these negatives, pictures were scanned and developed into photos.
Still, there are some people who use Films instead of digital cameras. It is not that easy but if used properly then the pictures taken will be of the same quality as in digital cameras. Every film photographer needs photo editing company to make their job easy.
In this article, we’ll be providing you with some tips on How to use film’s in Photography.
Types of photo film
Films are categorized in three different categories. First, is the size of the film. Most common film is the 35mm film it can be converted to a higher resolution photo than other films. Then comes the quality of the film, there are three qualities of films e.g. – Black and White negative, C-41 and a side film called Chrome or E6.The better the film quality the longer it takes to expire. The last but, most important one is the film speed; it is the exposure time a film can take. Lower exposure time means slow speed film and higher exposure time means fast speed film.
Things about Wedding Photography You Should Know
Film Speed
The most important part of film photography is to control the film speed. It is the sensitivity of the film to the exposure. This can be controlled by setting up the ASA (the ISO in analog camera). Better sensitivity means faster film speed.
Shooting in Low Light
It is very tough to shoot in low light by using Film’s. By controlling the ASA and setting it up to 1600 (the maximum ASA) will give you a bright image but it will be grainy, the quality will be lower.
Using Flash
For Film camera, flash is the only option that can increase the light amount on the object and can take a better quality picture. The greater amount of flash the brighter the picture.
External source of light
Every film has a fixed white balance equal to daylight, using any other source as Tungsten lights or bulbs will make the picture grainy and lower in resolution. So, a light that is closer to the daylight will make it easy for film cameras to click the image with a better resolution.
Latitude
As in digital cameras, there is also an option called the latitude in the films that controls the exposure of the image. Every film has a different latitude. The range of latitude in the film decides the brightness of the image.
Demerits of using Expired Films
Films have expiring tendencies. Every film has its expiry date. Using the film after it has expired results in the resolution of the photo to decrease and the colors get mixed up with the image being grainy and dull.
Processing Film
Just like digital cameras the photos in the films need to be converted into photographs. But, unlike digital cameras, the photos of the films need to be processed using chemicals and then scanned and printed into photos on photo paper.
Enlarging and printing
Every photos needs to get printed .Some people like to keep it the simple A4 size and some would want to increase the size. In case of Film’s the 35mm size film allows the maximum enlargement which will be 12” × 18”.
Controlling the sensitivity
Like the digital camera, there is also a dial in the film camera which allows the photographer to control the ASA according to the light intensity needed.
Conclusion
Though Film Photography has lost its credibility in this era, it still can be used to click better quality images if used in the right way. It still remains among the classic history of Photography.
